Dear Hillclimbers,

Hi. Please see below Rob Roy track upgrade update kindly provided by Wayne Rushton of the MG Car Club which includes an update about the return road, & also attached CAMS Technical Bulletin 22 March 2013 re Schedule J – Protective Padding Moratorium, kindly forwarded by Ken Price of the MGCC.

Regards,

Fraser Faithfull

for the CAMS Victorian Hillclimb Advisory Panel

SAFETY FINISH LINE AREA.
Since last year a significant amount of work has gone into providing additional safety infrastructure from well before the Finish line area to well past it. We were particularly fortunate in sourcing materials quickly and the work has all been achieved by volunteers in a very short time and provides a significant improvement to the safety aspects of the venue. Additional tyre walls have also been put in place along the property boundary fence line and existing ones re-worked. Although there will be the usual familiarisation run on the day it would be worth while taking a walk to the top to inspect the works.

BRAKING AREA.
When we were discussing this project it came to our attention that some drivers were unsure exactly where the Finish line was located and consequently kept their foot down well into the braking area. As a consequence, “frangible” boards located close to the track, will designate the Finish line and hopefully ensure drivers brake responsibly. ( Hopefully the car a personage will not be on the Finish on race days? )

NEW SPECTATOR AREA
An additional improvement, particularly for spectators, is a new spectator area adjacent to Turn 2 which provides a view of at least 70% of the track. Cars can be seen from Turn 1 almost to the Finish line. This was first available at the Historic & Classic November meeting and proved to be very popular. Tell your spectator friends about this. They will not be disappointed.

RETURN ROAD.
We are well aware the Return Road is a shortcoming but it it not the easy fix some might suggest. Because of the environmental overlays on the property this cannot be sealed. However, after discussion with a construction engineer and the local council on numerous occasions, a compromise has been reached and they have agreed to allow a substantial upgrade. This will not be cheap and consequently Rob Roy needs the continued support of the hill climb fraternity at its meetings to help fund the project which ultimately will be to everyones advantage. In the meantime the road will be reworked to ensure it is safe and useable. We are hoping this upgrade will be completed as early as possible this year.

Regards
Rob Roy Committee.

Round 1 Event Notes

FEBRUARY 2 TWILIGHT HILLCLIMB

Round 1 of the 2013 Natures Organics Victorian Hillclimb Championship

Our first event for the year has been run and won! A good field of around 90 of the best hillclimbers in the state competed in this event on what turned out to be an outstanding day both weather wise and competition wise. What was meant to be an ordinary day as for as rain etc. was concerned turned out to be bright and sunny, and the track as conducive to very fast and some record breaking times.

Brett Hayward took out fastest time of day in a record breaking time of 45.16 seconds for the Clockwise Track. This time was over a second quicker than the previous outright and class record. Alan Foley made reappearance after some time with his newly rebuilt engine, and took out second place with 48.46 seconds, just 0.05 seconds in front of Greg Ackland in his old car, who in turn was 0.01 seconds in front of Malcolm Oastler. Garry (lend me a car and I will drive it) Martin was fifth in the Greg Auckland car, followed by Bruce Minahan, South Australian David Pfeiffer in the ex-Alan Foley Talbot, Glenn White in the white White, Peter Minahan and Keith Wilson rounding out the top ten. Just outside the top ten was Andrew Mizzi in the GAK Martin, who recorded his best ever time, and was more than happy in doing so.

Records were also broken by Alan Saint (pictured) in the BMW M3R in the Improved Production 2001 and Over (his time was 56.54 compared to the old record of 58.21), and Peter McNiven (Toyota Sprinter) in Sports Sedans up to 1600 his new time of 55.59 seconds was almost two seconds quicker than the previous record of 57.52 seconds. Peter also committed the cardinal sin on the day by beating regular driver (and father) Jim McNiven!!

Formula Libre and Sports Cars attracted good fields, as did Improved Production. It is fair to say that Sports Sedans classes are looking a bit sick at the present time. There were 14 open wheeler cars, 22 sports and 23 Improved Production cars present more had entered but unfortunately some of them did not make it through the morning practice session.
